Kig is a program for exploring geometric constructions.
It is meant as a better replacement for such free programs as KGeo, KSeg and Dr. Geo and commercial programs like Cabri.
Kig is free software, as in "free speech". This basically means that you do not have to ask my permission to use it, to improve it, to distribute or even to sell it. The only thing that you are required to do is to pass on these rights if you distribute Kig. Of course, this section is not meant as a legal text, and you should read the GPL license if you want to know what your rights are.
Kig is meant as a useful and powerful utility for high school students and teachers, and as a fun project for me and others. I have learned a lot by working on it, and it's fun to work together with other people on it. I've written much of the Kig code myself, but I've also had a lot of help from other people. Please see the about box for more information.
🍥️ Debian:
Interactive geometry tool
Kig is an application for interactive geometric construction, allowing students to draw and explore mathematical figures and concepts using the computer.
Kig supports macros and is scriptable using Python. It can import and export files in various formats, including SVG, Cabri, Dr. Geo, KGeo, KSeg, and XFig.
This package is part of the KDE education module.
🌍️ Wikipedia [en]:
Kig is free and open-source interactive geometry software, which is part of the KDE Education Project. It has some facilities for scripting in Python, as well as the creating macros from existing constructions.
Import and export
Kig can import files made by DrGeo and Cabri Geometry as well as its own file format, which is XML-encoded. Kig can export figures in LaTeX format and as SVG (vector graphics) files.
Objects
Kig can handle any classical object of the dynamic geometry, but also:
• The center of curvature and osculating circle of a curve;
• The dilation, generic affinity, inversion, projective application, homography and harmonic homology;
• The hyperbola with given asymptotes;
• The Beziers curves (2nd and 3rd degree);
• The polar line of a point and pole of a line with respect to a conic section;
• The asymptotes of a hyperbola;
• The cubic curve through 9 points;
• The cubic curve with a double point through 6 points;
• The cubic curve with a cusp through 4 points.
Scripting language
Inside the figure
Another object is available inside Kig, it is a Python language script. It can accept Kig objects as variables, and always return one object.
