Gateways is a 2D platform game set in the lab of an inventor called Ed following an outbreak of a number of his more "creative" experiments. Can you help him escape the lab?
Alongside the traditional platform elements such as jumping on enemies heads, spikes and moving platforms are the gateway guns. The gateway guns allow you to place two gateways on the walls, floors and ceilings of the lab so that when you pass through one you emerge out of the other. As progress is made through the game different types of gateway gun are introduced with different effects. After the basic gun, you acquire a gun that creates two gateways of different sizes, passing through one way shrinks Ed to half his size and the other way makes Ed grow to twice his size. Then you find a gun where one gateway doesn't just connect to the others location but also its time, allowing Ed to travel back in time and encounter earlier versions of himself. Finally, the last gun manipulates gravity so passing through allows Ed to walk along walls and on ceilings.
Gateways takes place on a single sprawling map rammed with puzzles and challenges. As power ups are acquired more and more of the map opens up containing more power ups and secrets. In addition to the gateway guns Ed will also find a torch letting him light up the darker areas of the map and a mirror which can be used to deflect lasers.
A sophisticated help system helps Ed along throughout the game. Every puzzle has a help point next to it where Ed can use power orbs to find out if the puzzle can be solved using his current power ups and abilities. f it can be solved and you're still stumped then spending more power orbs will provide you with the solution

Gateways est un jeu de plateformes en 2D prenant place dans le laboratoire d'un inventeur dénommé Ed, dont un certain nombre de ses expériences les plus «créatives» se sont emballées. Pourrez-vous l'aider à s'échapper de son laboratoire ?
En dehors d'éléments de plateformes traditionnels tels que le saut sur la tête des ennemis, les pieux et les plateformes mobiles, le joueur rencontrera un élément spécifique : les passerelles.
Ed pourra par exemple disposer 2 passerelles - l'une au sol, l'autre au plafond, lui permettant lorsqu'il passe au travers de l'une d'elles, de ressortir de l'autre.
Au fil des progrès dans le jeu différents types de passerelles sont introduits avec des effets différents.
Après la passerelle de base, Ed pourra acquérir 2 passerelles de tailles différentes : en passant d'un côté, Ed rétréci de moitié, tandis que de l'autre, Ed devient 2 fois plus grand.
Une autre passerelle connecte Ed à l'emplacement de l'autre, dans l'espace et dans le temps, ce qui permet à Ed de voyager dans le temps et de rencontrer des versions antérieures de lui-même.
Enfin, la dernière passerelle manipule la gravité permettant à Ed de se promener le long des murs et des plafonds.
Gateways se déroule sur une seule carte tentaculaire bourrée de puzzles et de challenge. A mesure que les power-ups sont récupérés, la carte se découvre contenant davantage de power-ups et de secrets.
En plus de la passerelle, Ed trouvera également une torche permettant d'éclairer les zones sombres de la carte et un miroir lui permettant de détourner les lasers.
Un système d'aide sophistiqué est disponible tout au long de la partie.
Chaque puzzle dispose d'un point d'aide dans lequel Ed peut utiliser des orbes/pierres lui permettant de savoir si le puzzle peut être résolu avec les power-ups et capacités dont il dispose.
Si un puzzle peut être résolu et qu'il laisse néanmoins le joueur perplexe, celui-ci pourra dépenser davantage d'orbes pour obtenir la solution.
