[en]: A libre, multi-platform solo (IAs) / multiplayer FPS game, on a Spaghetti Western theme, where players compete with pistol, rifle or dynamite on maps and soundtracks (Ennio Morricone) reminiscent of Sergio Leone's movies. It offers several game modes (Duel, Bank Robbery, Death Match, Team Match) and realistic weapons (damage, pace, loading, ...). The best performing weapons are acquired through bonuses obtained after fighting, and are lost when the player is eliminated. 📕🐧"A libre FPS game on a Spaghetti Western theme, where players compete with pistol, rifle or dynamite"🐧📕

An open sourced, total conversion of id Software's Quake III Arena.

Smokin' Guns is intended to be a semi-realistic simulation of the "Old West's" great atmosphere & was developed on Id Software's Quake III Arena Engine.

This total conversion includes completely new weapons created with historically correct information about damage, rate of fire, reload time, etc. It also includes new gametypes and maps inspired mostly by movies. And to increase the feeling of a "gunslingers atmosphere" we also created music tracks and sounds adapted to this time period.

About Smokin' Guns

The Smokin' Guns game started its life under the name of Western Quake. It was originally developed by a team known as Iron Claw Interactive. They released WQ3 beta 2.0 in 2003, after which development all but ceased. In May 2005, development of Western Quake was taken over of by a bunch of cowboys calling themselves The Smokin' Guns with the blessings of the former team. With the release of the stand alone version in 2008, the game was renamed to Smokin' Guns, and the team to Smokin' Guns Productions. Throughout this manual, anytime you see the word "we" it should be noted that "we" refers to one or the other (or both) teams.

Game Modes

All gamemodes in Smokin' Guns are based on the same money system, implying purchase of equipment with money from rewards. It means you have to kill other players (the amount of money you get depends on the rank of the player you killed) in order to get cash and be able to buy your equipment. In round-based gamemodes buying equipment is only possible near your start location.

All gamemodes, except Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, are round-based. If you die during a round you will only respawn at the beginning of the next round, staying as a spectator during the current round. Rounds last a specific amount of time or until one team has completed their objectives or all members of a team are dead. The team that wins the round gets a point. Of course, the team with most points wins the match!

Round Teamplay (dm_)

This gametype is the most basic gametype in Smokin' Guns. The two teams have the same goal: to kill all players on the opposing team. There is no other way to win a round.

Bank Robbery (br_)

As the name says, the goal of this mission types is to rob a bank and bring the money back to a secure point. To do so each player of the attacking team is equipped with two sticks of dynamite in order to blow up the safe. Robbing the bank isn't going to be easy because the whole second team is defending the bank and will try to prevent the other team from getting in. While a robbery might prove to be more difficult, it will also be much more profitable than just killing off the defending team. Once the attacking team wins a round the roles are reversed, meaning the team that defended the bank before will have to rob it.

Duel Mode (du_)

This is where you can reenact the classical Wild West showdown. In this mode, the only weapons you can buy are pistols (see: "Buy Menu"). The duel maps are actually large levels divided into several parts, and up to 16 players per map are supported. Separate duels can be performed simultaneously in different parts of the map.

The combatants start out facing each each other, unable to move for as long as the duel intro music plays. This is the time to buy pistols. When the duel music stops, the contest begins. Your pistols will be holstered, so you have to draw them quickly. Right away, your aim will be off. When the crosshair has faded completely back in, your aim will be accurate again.

The winner of the duel is rewarded with money which allows for purchasing better pistols, and stays on the same map part, where he faces the next opponent right away. The loser has to wait in line for his next turn. You get a star for every duel you win. As soon as somebody reaches five stars, the duel round ends and the winner gets one duel point. The number of rounds won is shown on the scoreboard, in brackets before each player's name. As the next round starts all players start from scratch with no extra money or pistols. The duel game ends when one of the players has won three rounds (customizable through the duellimit cvar).

🌍️ Wikipedia:

Smokin' Guns (SG) is a first-person shooter video game. Smokin' Guns is intended to be a semi-realistic simulation of the American Old West's atmosphere and was developed on id Software's Quake III Arena Engine. Gameplay as well as locations are inspired by Western movies, particularly those from the Spaghetti Western genre.

Smokin' Guns’s codebase is free and open source software, distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License. It is built upon ioquake3, an upgrade of the original Quake III engine. The artwork and other media are licensed under a proprietary non free license.

History and development

Smokin' Guns was originally developed by Iron Claw Interactive under the name Western Quake 3. From 2001 to 2003, Iron Claw Interactive released two versions (beta 1.0 and beta 2.0) as modifications respectively total conversions for Quake III Arena. Further development by Iron Claw Interactive stopped after the release of version beta 2.0 in 2003.

The development was continued by a new team in 2005 in cooperation and with the blessings of Iron Claw Interactive. The new team released two additional versions of Western Quake3 (beta 2.1 in 2005 and beta 2.2 in 2006). The new team, going under the name of Smokin' Guns Productions, released Smokin' Guns 1.0 as a standalone version based on the open-source Quake III engine in January 2009. The name of the game was changed in order to avoid legal problems as well as to reflect the work of the new team since it took over development in 2005.

In June 2012 the 1.1 version was released .

Gameplay

Smokin' Guns is a semi-realistic simulation of the "Old West's" atmosphere. The game is a so-called total conversion which was developed on the Quake3 engine. It includes new weapons created with historically correct information about damage, rate of fire, reload time, etc. Moreover, it includes new gametypes and maps inspired mostly by movies as well as a custom soundtrack.

The game differs in many aspects from similar games which are based on Quake3:

• It is not possible to regenerate health. All damage taken remains until a player finally dies and is revived.
• Weapons have to be bought with money which is given as a reward ("bounty") for defeating opponents. The amount of money depends on the rank of both players involved.
• Defeated players lose their weapons and other equipment which can be picked up by others. There are only very few weapons lying around in maps (in contrast to normal Quake3).
• Money pick-ups can be found in several maps (Depending on gametype).
• It is possible to play in Akimbo-Mode, that is, with two pistols in parallel. The pistols do not necessarily have to be of the same type.

Modes

The following game modes are included in the game:

• Bank Robbery: The goal of this game type is robbing the bank. One team has to attack the bank and steal the "money bag". The robber's team is equipped with two sticks of dynamite each, which allows them to blow a hole in the building and proceed to the money. After grabbing the money, they have to head back to the escape point with it to win. The second team is protecting the bank and will try to prevent the other team from getting in. While a robbery might be more difficult to pull off, it will be more profitable than defeating the defending team.
• Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch: This mode resembles the classic Deathmatch gameplay. Players spawn at random areas of the level and must compete against other players in a wild west shootout. The winner is the one who defeats the most opponents in a set time or kill limit. The levels have money and weapons that the player may pick up, and more money is awarded when the player defeats an opponent. This allows the player to purchase new and better weapons. In Team Deathmatch mode, the players are divided into two teams. The winning team is the one who defeats the most opponents in a set time limit. Levels remain the same as normal Deathmatch mode.
• Duel: The duel mode resembles classical western shoot-outs using only pistols. This game type is suitable for 2, 3 or 4 players and also for 2 player teams. The duel maps are huge maps divided into several parts. Separate Duels can be performed in each part of the map (up to 16 players are supported per map). The details of the duel are as follows: The combatants stand opposite each other while a musical clock starts to play. When the music stops the duel begins. The holstered pistols have to be drawn, it will take a few seconds until one can aim precisely (this will be indicated by the crosshair gradually fading in). During this time the player can decide whether he wants to face his opponent (with poorer chances to hit) or seek cover. The winner of the duel gets money and usually stays on the map part he "won" where he will meet the next challenger.
• Round Teamplay: This mode is a cross between Bank Robbery and Deathmatch. Players are divided into two teams. A point is awarded to the team who defeats the opposing team. The winning team is the first to reach the set amount of points or has the most points in a set time limit.
